Philmont Scout Ranch is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Thomas “Black Jack” Ketchum, a legendary train robber that was executed by hanging. Ketchum was the only person ever hanged in the state of New Mexico for train robbery and shortly after his death, the law was found to be unconstitutional. Campers have reported seeing Ketchum's ghost, dressed as a cowboy, but in all black.
